Agriculture

Water use in agriculture began at the dawn of time. The water used has always been that of rainfall, rivers and streams, springs and the aquifer. Water, in addition to human uses, is used for vegetable cultivation and animal breeding. India has been tapping into increasing quantities since 1975 as a result of the sharp increase in population and the ever-increasing demand for food.

The amount of water available through direct withdrawal is unevenly distributed on Earth. The most water-rich countries are the United States of America, China, India, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Indonesia.

The percentage of water withdrawn out of the total available reaches 85-100% in many countries: India, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Malawi, Madagascar, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay and Guyana.

Irrigation consumption of agricultural land exceeds 20% of resources in Greece, Italy, United Arab Emirates, Laos, Ecuador, India (39%), Pakistan (52%), Azerbaijan and Suriname (71%).

Industrial activity

The industrial use of water is mainly for washing, dilution, cooling, steam production as well as as a compound in production processes.

The United States of America and China are the largest consumers of water for industrial activities. Africa and northwest South America have countries with low water consumption for industrial use.

The percentage of water on the available water reaches values above 70% in Canada and Europe, while in India it represents only 2%.

Domestic water

Globally, the domestic use of water in the world is around 10% of the amount available. However, most countries use 30% of their water for their domestic needs.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, domestic water consumption is very low in favour of agricultural water.

The countries where domestic consumption accounts for more than 80% of what is available are the United Kingdom and the Central African Republic.
